What the free plan actually allows
On 9 September 2026 the plan table at smallpdf.com/pricing marked the core tools on the free plan with the words daily download limit. It did not print the number anywhere in the page, but a Smallpdf guide speaks of 2 compressions a day on a free account. What the table shows clearly is which features are switched off.
Strong compression, batch compress, batch convert, editing text and text recognition were all marked unavailable on the free plan. The AI tools were marked Limited without numbers, and signing through the free Sign.com account stopped at two documents a month.
What pdfviz gives away for nothing
pdfviz needs no account and no sign-in, and it has no daily counter. Compress takes a target in kilobytes and runs four methods against it in your tab. There is no stronger paid mode held back, because there is no paid tier for the browser tools at all.
That is possible because nothing is uploaded, so there is no server bill to recover per file. A hosted tier may arrive for the work a browser tab genuinely cannot do, such as text recognition on a long scan, and it would not move these tools behind it.
The features Smallpdf has and pdfviz does not

If you compress a few files a month and never convert anything, the free Smallpdf plan and pdfviz both work, and pdfviz does it without an account or a counter. If you need conversion, text recognition or signatures, Smallpdf Pro at $9-12 a month or a desktop tool is the honest answer.
