1 MB is a roomy cap on ordinary forms - and this page is the compress tool with exactly that number dialled in. Drop the file, press one button, and take home a result that fits, or the smallest honest file with the exact distance left to go. Nothing leaves this browser tab.
Four steps to a 1 MB file
-
Bring the file
Choose a PDF or drag it onto the page. It opens locally in this tab - your file is never uploaded, no queue, no account.
-
1 MB is already set
This preset opens with the ceiling filled in as 1 MB. Keep the number: the level buttons recompute the target from the file size, so pressing one replaces this preset instead of squeezing harder at the same ceiling. Type another cap only if the form names one.
-
Let it squeeze
One press runs structural cleanup, image downsampling and font subsetting on your own CPU, with the raster redraw reserved for files nothing else could bring down.
-
Judge the verdict
The page reports the final size, the distance to 1 MB and the winning method beside a preview. Download when the numbers work for you.
How the four methods differ is on how it works; Size breakdown tells you in advance whether your file is the squeezing kind.
The 976 KB trick for strict counters
This page counts 1,024 KB to the megabyte, so its 1 MB line sits at 1,048,576 bytes. A server counting flat millions stops you at 1,000,000 - which is 976.56 KB here, a 4.6% gap wide enough to bounce a file that fits on this side. Typing 976 KB dodges the dispute for a cut nobody can see on the page.
The general rule - the ceiling, both ways of counting, the 4.6% trap - lives under Your target is a ceiling in bytes.
What a 1 MB budget buys per page
On a five page scan that is over 200 KB per page. On a twenty page report that is about 50 KB per page. On a forty page mixed document the average drops toward 25 KB per page, and there the page count matters more than any setting.
The method that wins tells you what happened: if an image method won, page images were re-encoded at a lower quality. Either way, compare the preview before sending.
Whatever the numbers say on paper, open the result and check two things before sending: the byte count against your cap, and whether the pages still read cleanly at your usual zoom.
Forms that stop at 1 MB
A resume for a portal that caps every attachment alike. A supporting document where the instructions print one number for all uploads. A scan you mail instead of linking because the other side asked for a file. In each case the ritual is the same: squeeze, read the verdict, send.
When the field names a nearby number, the siblings are 800 KB below and 2 MB above. When the file carries pages nobody will read, Delete PDF pages removes them before you squeeze.
Above 1 MB? Three ways out
Read the verdict first: final size, distance to target, winning method - that name tells you what to attack. Then pick an exit: split the document with Split PDF, accept a roomier target if the cap bends, or drop dead pages and run again. At 1 MB a forty page file averages 25 KB per page - past that density, shrink the page count before chasing bytes. The reasoning sits under If the result lands above your target.
1 MB: five answers
- Does 1 MB mean 1,000 KB or 1,024 KB here?
- 1,024 KB, which is 1,048,576 bytes - the tool counts in binary units throughout. A system counting flat millions is stricter by 48,576 bytes, and a 976 KB target clears both readings.
- My file is already under 1 MB - now what?
- Nothing: you already fit, and the engine returns the file unchanged instead of squeezing further for no reason. Compress again only if a stricter cap shows up.
- What changes visibly at 1 MB?
- That depends on the winning method named in the verdict: if an image method won, page images were re-encoded at a lower quality. Either way, compare the preview before sending, and read Compress PDF without losing quality when every pixel matters.
- Is my file uploaded anywhere?
- No. pdfviz opens the PDF in this tab and the work happens on your own CPU. There is no queue and no account standing between you and the result.
- Does text stay selectable?
- For files the reader can open with text, yes: each candidate is opened again and counted against the source, and anything missing over 2% of its characters is not offered for download. A file already under the target returns unchanged, and a source the reader cannot open has no baseline to compare.
