Four fixes that cover most mail

Before writing, check whether your problem is one of these. Each has a page that solves it directly.

The file asks for a password. Open it with unlock a PDF using the password you know, then run the tool on the copy. A password nobody knows cannot be recovered or guessed here.
The tab crashes or reloads on a huge file. The work happens in your browser, so the ceiling is your device's memory. Split the file with organize pages first, or run it on a machine with more memory.
The tool refuses the file at once. It is probably not what the tool reads: a photo renamed to .pdf, a HEIC where JPG was expected. The catalog below names each case and points at the right tool.
The tool worked but gave no download. The result failed its own check: text or a page would have been lost, so the file was thrown away instead of shipped. That refusal is the verification doing its job, described on how it works.

Four things make an answer possible: the address of the tool page you were on, the message on screen copied exactly, your browser and operating system, and the rough size and page count of the file.

Without the message text there is usually nothing to go on.

Do not attach the document. The tools never upload your file and we do not want a copy of it.

If the fault only happens with one file and you can share a version with nothing private in it, say so and we will ask.

This is a small project, so every message is read by a person; involved cases simply take longer than simple ones.

Asked often

Why did a tool refuse the file it just made?: Because the file failed the check that runs after every job. A refused download means the output lost text or a page that should have survived, and shipping it would have been worse than failing. Nothing is kept and nothing is uploaded either way.
My file is too big and the tab crashes. Can you fix it?: Not from this side. The ceiling is your device's memory, since the work happens in your browser. Split the file into parts with organize pages first, or run it on a machine with more memory.
Can you recover a lost PDF password?: No. There is no recovery, no guessing and no cracking. If you do not have the password, no tool here can open the file.
Where do I report a file that fails?: Write to [email protected] with the tool page, the exact message on screen, your browser and the rough file size. Do not attach the document. The catalog below covers what the tools print; anything outside it came from the browser.
Do you keep a copy of a file that failed?: No. Nothing is uploaded, so there is nothing to keep. A failed run leaves nothing behind once you close the tab.
Can I suggest a tool or a change?: Yes, at the same address. Say what job you were doing and where the current tools fell short. Suggestions that fit the two rules - never uploaded, never unchecked - get built first.

The file was refused

The rest of this page is the message catalog. Every string below is the exact text a tool can print, taken from the code rather than guessed. Find yours and read what follows it.

This file is not a PDF. The first bytes of the file are not a PDF header. A file renamed from .jpg to .pdf will do this. Check what the file really is, and if it is an image use images to PDF instead.
This PDF could not be opened. The file is a PDF but its structure is broken past the point the reader can guess. Try repair a PDF, which rebuilds the cross-reference table.
This PDF is too damaged to open. Truncated files cannot be repaired in this tab. The file ends before the document does, usually because a download or a copy stopped early. Get the file again from the source. Nothing can rebuild bytes that are not there.
Password-protected PDFs are not supported yet. The tool you picked cannot read an encrypted file. That is per tool, not per site: open it with unlock a PDF first, using the password you know, then run this tool on the copy it gives you.
That password did not open this PDF. The password is wrong for this file. pdfviz cannot recover or guess a password, and it does not try.

The tool needs more from you

Choose at least two PDF files. Merging needs two or more inputs.
Choose at least one JPG or PNG image. The images-to-PDF tool takes JPG and PNG only.
Images to PDF accepts JPG and PNG. Use HEIC to PDF for HEIC or HEIF photos and TIFF to PDF for standard and multi-page TIFF scans.
Enter page numbers such as 1, 3-5. The page box was empty or unreadable.
A page number past the end. Your range names a page the document does not have; use numbers up to the last page shown in the tool.
Select at least one item to remove. The privacy scan found metadata but nothing was ticked.
Enter a header, a footer, or both. The stamp tool needs text to place.
Mark at least one region to redact. Nothing was marked, so there is nothing to remove.

The job could not finish

Page N is too large to draw at 300 DPI. Choose a lower resolution. The image the page would produce is bigger than the browser will allocate. Drop to 150 or 96 DPI.
The stamp falls outside a page. Choose another position, offset or font size. The text would land off the paper on at least one page, so nothing was written.
This font cannot write one or more characters. Use Latin text for this version. The stamp text contains characters the embedded font has no glyph for.
This image has no usable dimensions. The image file opened but reports a width or height of zero.
The selected metadata is no longer present. The file changed between the scan and the strip. Run the scan again.
